87 & 86 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

I started out strong on my 2015 Bike Commuting goal, even though I got a late start with the weather. By early April, I had ridden 12 times on the Bianchi San Jose but then came the announcement at work.  The company I was working for had decided that they didn't want to be government regulated any more and that meant that they have to sell off many of it's assets and businesses, one of those being sold is the one that I work for.  This was a crushing blow and really put me in a funk, so much so that I had barely the will to ride any more, let alone to ride to work.

I managed to ride once, just once in May.  It was still cold enough in the mornings to warrant an extra layer but it was hard mentally to get into the groove to ride.

Riding home in the afternoon was a lot warmer so I was able to do so with a lot lighter kit. What I discovered is it's hard to enjoy riding when your future is so uncertain.  It almost seemed like another chore to do and I already had more than enough on my plate, complicated with the fact that I now have to find a new job.

Fast forward another month.  Things at work have gotten a little better and the anxiety has lessened to a certain degree which prompted me to get on the bike again for a commute.

It really felt great to be riding again and I was admonishing myself the whole ride in that I should have just kept riding despite my career anxieties.  Two things kept me off the bike, one is that with the announcement there seemed to be a push to close many of the things I was working on sooner while there were still resources.  So while many others in the office seemed to be showing up for work for the minimal requirement I was working my ass off.

On top of work being additionally busy, add looking for a new job, which is a job in itself.  Working a full day and then trying to spend time with the kids after work leaves mornings, which I should be been pedaling to work, sending out networking emails and registering on various company career portals hoping to hear back.

Having been through a layoff before, with the same company, and then coming back and then having the prospect of another layoff on the horizon really sucks.  That anxiety makes it tough to enjoy the things that you really enjoy but after two months I have come to realization that you can't let it drive you crazy and that you need to find outlets, otherwise it will eat you up.  It ate me up for a month or so, and pushed myself to ride on the weekends just to stay in shape but now I am feeling much better and I am just going to keep riding as much as possible because it feels so much better when I do.

When I got home from my ride, Elliot wanted to do our a little L Tandem to the Lake ride that we do from time to time.  His first day of summer vacation was spent at home with his brother and older sister, who was in charge of the boys all day, and I think he needed to let off a little steam.

I was tired from the ride home because I really pushed myself despite my wonky speed sensor on the Garmin but when my son wants to ride it is my duty to answer the call.  The lake was like glass and the setting sun made it look really nice.  After the boat ramp we rode up Pond Brook Road to his friend's house where he hung out with one of his best friends for a half our and I chatted with his friend's father, who rides, too.  Only right now, he has a herniated disc and will be having surgery and won't be on the bike again for a couple of months.

88 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  12 gallons
CO2:  240 lbs

Beautiful morning to kick off National Bike Month

There were some drivers that were courteous like the one in this Subaru
and then the not so courteous one driving the silver BMW and talking on the Cell phone

Still need a jacket and gloves on the way in

and an earband

On the way home I didn't need my long sleeve and I got really sweaty

89 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  11 gallons
CO2:  220 lbs

Tuesday's commute was simply glorious!

I had to ride through town and stop at the Middle School
to perform my civic duty

Since I was already past the Newtown Flag Pole, I headed to the office on Rt 302
I realized how much I missed riding this stretch of road
It's still cold enough in the mornings to warrant a little snivel gear

I left the office kind of late

It was warm enough for shorts and finger less gloves
but I sill wore my jacket because the wind was fierce

I rode like bat out of hell to get home before it got dark.
I got home in 33 minutes which is the fasted time yet,
and I was on a singlespeed!

91 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  9 gallons
CO2:  180 lbs

By delaying my departure 30 minutes I missed the showers
but still dressed for a rainy commute.

It was overkill to say the least.

The ride home was much better but boy am I pasty!

Riding down Pond Brook Road (dirt portion) I had a mirror failure.
It's now history!

92 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  8 gallons
CO2:  160 lbs

Upon leaving Chez Snack, the temperature read 37 degrees but by the time I got up to town the temperature gauge on the Garmin was reading 45 degrees and did I feel over dressed by then

I have to say though, I think this morning was my first pleasant morning bike commute

Everything was working nicely

Instead of riding home, I had to ride over to the car dealer and pick up my wife's car so I will have to make up the mileage next week

93 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  7 gallons
CO2:  140 lbs

I was waffling big time Wednesday morning on whether or not to ride to work due to the afternoon forecast. In fact, leading up till Tuesday, the forecast was for rain all day but Tuesday night it changed to showers midday and the real rain starting not till 7 PM.

So I decided to go for it.  I went for some different kit though, still wore the Lake 303s because the temperature Wednesday morning was in the 30s but wore two layers with orange cycling rain jacket. That combination is perfect in the 30s.  Also wore tights under cycling shorts because that way on the ride home if I misjudged the weather and it was really raining I could wear my new rain pants over them as opposed to my colder weather (re-purposed) riding pants that don't fair well under the rain pants.  I also road with my old mountain bike winter riding gloves because it was way to warm for the lobsters.

Riding up Tunnel Road, this Magna Mountain Bike is still sitting out on the side of the road. Initially, I contemplated picking it for parts but each time I look at it I say to myself it's not worth it.  My neighbor's son could use another bike, however, the cost to bring it up to speed just doesn't seem worth it.

Overall, the ride in was pretty good as well as the ride back.  I missed the afternoon showers but leaving closer to 6 PM increased my chances of seeing rain on the ride home, which I did half way through the ride on Currituck Road.  It was a light rain, almost a mist, and it wasn't worth stopping to try out the rain pants,

First full week of April is almost in the books and the snow piled up at the end of the driveway has melted about some more.  I am still hoping that it will be there by the end of the month!

94 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  6 gallons
CO2:  120 lbs

Monday bike commutes mean bringing the work week's clothes with me.

Fortunately, I have a pannier for that!

Riding in was a little foggy and damp.

Coming home, wasn't.

It was so nice out today I rode home without gloves.

In fact, I was able to show a little skin.

95 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Savings from Bike Commuting

Gas:  5 gallons
CO2:  100 lbs

Yet another cold morning bike commute requiring me to be dressed to the nines for it.  On the ride in to work it got down 27 degrees F and it's April 2nd!  I think I am used to this now.

A few updates to the Bianchi, new handlebar bag previously mentioned, and I took my Vintage Cannondale Seat pack off the Synapse and mounted it under the seat and fits perfectly!  On the ride home Tuesday, I did loose a screw holding the rack and fender to the frame.

Thanks to Cliff for telling me about an inexpensive way to make locktite, use nail polish.  I just so happen to have a bottle of black nail polish that I used to use on the Qball laying around so I coated the threads on the new screw, let it dry and screwed it in.  Removed the other and did the same.  After today's commute they are still holding tightly.

On the way in there were a lot more honks, thumbs ups, head bobs and waves.  The honks were not rude just commuters letting me know that they are more important than me because they are in a car and I am on a bike. The ride home was different story, got passed in the office park on White Turkey extension by someone with an inferiority complex of some sort doing 60 mph and to what end I ask because there is a busy intersection at the top of the hill anyway and they will have to stop.  That car was a BMW.

On the bucolic and lazy Old Bethel road another BMW flew past me.  Lastly, I rode down the dirt section of Pond Brook Road and that was a mistake. The wet sections of the road made it feel like riding in mud but I did get home in 43 minutes!  In fact my times both to and from the office were under an hour!
