While Rutland and Killington Ski Resort sit right next to each other in Rutland County, they represent two completely different worlds. Rutland is a historic, blue-collar commercial city that serves as the region's main population center, while Killington is a fast-paced, high-end mountain resort designed entirely around tourism, seasonal sports, and premier outdoor recreation. As much as I like skiing at Killington I love Rutland and hope to make it my home someday.
Those contrasts were really evident this past Saturday. In the morning, Ann and I went to the smash up derby at the County Fair Grounds. It was really fun to watch these people smash their jalopies into one another and perform other antics as well. Then we drove up to Killington to watch the Maxxis States's Cup Thule Showdown. We missed the downhill riding event but watched the jumping.
