Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS, also known as the Great Comet of 2024 and formally designated as C/2023 A3, is a non-periodic comet from the Oort cloud discovered by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China on 9 January 2023 and independently found by ATLAS South Africa on 22 February 2023. The comet passed perihelion at a distance of 0.39 AU (58 million km; 36 million mi) on 27 September 2024, when it became visible to the naked eye. Tsuchinshan–ATLAS peaked at its brightest magnitude on 9 October, shortly after passing the Sun, with an apparent magnitude of −4.9 per reported observations at the Comet Observation Database (COBS), making it the brightest comet observed in the Northern Hemisphere since Comet Hale–Bopp in 1997.
I headed out on the Wabash to see what it is like riding hills near my house. The sun had set by the time I left the house and got this great view of nautical twilight crossing over Lake Lillilonah. I also wanted to test out my new light that I got from Amazon.
According to MagicShine, the run times for this light are:
High Beam / Max Output (1,700 lumens): Approximately 2 hours of operation at full power.
Low Beam (High Setting): Around 3 hours of intense illumination.
Low Beam (Medium Setting): Around 5.5 hours.
Low Beam (Low Setting / Minimum Output): Up to 11 hours
I ran it with the high beam and it was pretty bright but would it live up to the claimed run time?
I figured the best place to the see the comet would be RT 133 in Bridgewater
and it did not dissapoint.
