Missing Link

 July 6, 2024

Ann & I rode down the Northern Rail Trail in New Hampshire to Danbury, NH.  A few years ago, I had ridden to Danbury from Concord but turned around due to the weather. Today's ride closes the loop on this rail trail.

We started in West Canaan, NH because we had already ridden to here on a previous day and I didn't want push Ann beyond her limits but this is going to be her longest ride with me to date. This is a really scenic area.

Only 129 miles to Boston

This is a straight trail

Riding by Mud Pond you can see Mt Cardigan off in the distance.

According to Wikipedia:  Mount Cardigan is a prominent bare-rock summit in the towns of Orange and Alexandria in western New Hampshire, United States. While its peak is only 3,155 feet (962 m) above sea level, it has extensive areas of bare granite ledges and alpine scrub, giving it the feel to hikers of a much higher mountain. Most of the summit area was denuded by devastating forest fires in 1855.

There are some cool cuts along the trail

and there is even a Tardis!

We stopped at the Danbury Country Store for Lunch. It had changed quite a bit since I was last here 4 years ago. When I was here last the front was just a porch with some seating. Now it's closed in with indoor seating.

We split a salad and bought wraps for lunch along with Gatorade.

As we were eating our lunch it started to rain.

It was just a passing shower and as Ann & I were getting ready to ride back I noticed that my rear tire was a little mushy. Sure enough, I had a flat. I got out of the sun because it got really hot, to change the tube.

We started riding again and the heat really ramped up after that brief rain storm. The only respite we got from the oppressive heat was the cuts and under the bridges, but the latter were also quite buggy.

The heat made it a long slog back to the car.
