Ann & I went out early Saturday morning before driving to Connecticut to resume our weekly rides to Wallingford - our Vermont equivalent of an OOF Ride. Heading out at 6:00 AM on our quasi gravel route - there is one section of dirt - it was a nice morning and didn't really feel like it was 50 degrees, which was the temperature showing up on my watch. We ride to Sweet Birch in Wallingford for breakfast and then ride back. Sometimes, if we do this ride on the weekend, we might get lunch and then stop at Rutland Beer Works on the way home for a beer.
We pass by around 6 farms and 5 of them have cattle. The first one we passed lies just after the highway (RT 4) and this morning we saw the farmer herding his cattle using a lawn tractor. That's a first.
Despite the overcast it was really nice riding weather. As we were riding down Creek Road, every car that passed us did so using the other lane and I would wave expressing my thanks. The last vehicle to pass was a red pickup and it was going the speed limit. Five minutes later we passed that red pickup, only it was down the embankment and two kids were in the bed screaming and crying. We stopped and called 911 and it took upwards of 30 minutes for Emergency Services to arrive. The kids parents actually got there faster.
The boy, who was driving, claimed to have blacked out, but who knows he could have been on his phone. The other occupant was his girlfriend who claimed to have broken toes. From what I could tell, despite a few minor abrasions, the boy was fine but just shook up. Rutland Regional EMS showed up after the Claredon Fire Department and both groups of emergency service personnel started preparing to move the girl out of the truck, Ann & I left.
We aborted our ride because I had an Electrician coming over to give me an estimate for putting electricity in our shed and had to be back before 9 AM.
We rode down Walker Mountain Road and then turned north on Middle Road and then took Alfecha Road back to Creek Road.
Once we were back on Creek Road I called in an order for breakfast at Speak Easy and rather heading straight home we rode into Rutland to pick up the food and then took it home.
