Surly Cross Check make over

August 11, 2024

After about a month of tinkering I finished my rebuild of my second Surly Cross Check.  I went from 9 to 10 speeds and a 36t rear cassette with a Shimano Tiagra drive train and a Wolftooth Road Link.

Besides upgrading the drive train, I added an FSA Adventure Crank and Adventure Bars.

My inaugural ride was a little gravel ride in Newtown that started at Fairfield Hills and headed south towards Monroe.  About a mile into the ride I was having issues with the drops and how they were sliding when I really mashed on the pedals.

Turning onto Old Platts Hill we started climbing the dirt road when tragedy struck. There was a crunching sound and then I stopped dead.  I thought my hanger broke but it turned out it was the Road Link.

I ended up getting a ride from a nice couple who lived in town.

Not only did the Road Link snap in two

The hanger connection housing on the rear derailleur cracked.

I sent it back to Shimano for warranty and they replaced it.
