An Island in the Storm: Testing the Wabash (and My Legs) in the Taconics

While rain was forecasted all day on Friday, a sudden break in the weather around 2 PM gave me the perfect window to head out on the Yamaha Wabash RT. It’s the only bike in my stable equipped with full fenders, and since it’s a Class 3 e-bike with pedal assist, it was also the perfect candidate for a wet-weather shakeout. Funnily enough, I hadn't ridden this bike in almost two years; an issue at my old office building had prevented me from recharging the battery in the garage, which ultimately put an end to my bike commuting.

Raptor Lane Trails

 Oct 2, 2026

This morning, I made the drive to Dorset to ride the Raptor Lane Trails, a network that caught my eye while browsing Trailforks. Beyond the great riding, I discovered an incredible piece of history hidden right next to the trails: the Gettysburg Quarry. This mountainside site once supplied the marble used for prominent buildings in Philadelphia, as well as the solemn tombstones for soldiers who died at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Another camping trip with bikes

Sep 12, 2026

We drove down to Buckland, MA on Saturday and boondocked at Ann's friend's house. We were in the heart of D2R2 land but we were there to help her friend celebrate her engagement and couldn't ride Saturday. In fact, we didn't ride at all due to the weather and our time table.

 Mar 28, 2025

I headed out to West Rutland again only this time I tried some different roads to add more to my Wandrer total.

Après Ski - 3 Buick Roubaix

Nov 16, 2024

Ann had a meeting with her accountant Saturday afternoon so I headed out on the bike to ride some gravel between Rutland and Castleton Vermont. I had been looking at all the gravel roads in the area and have been planning some rides. This one in particular was going to be climby.

Mt Philo in the Rain

 Nov 11, 2024

Ann & I drove her daughter back to UVM on Veteran's Day and brought our bikes.  We were hoping the rain would have subsided by the time we started our ride but we had no such luck. All the hills and mountains in this area fascinate me and Mt Philo stands out in particular when we drive by.

Scutney

 July 8, 2024

Another two state ride starting from Hanover, NH, only this time I headed south to ride around Mt Ascutney. Ride with GPS didn’t pull any surprises with the road surface types this time.

Lake Winnespaukee Gravel Grinder

After I solidified my plans to drive up to Epsom, NH to buy the MINI Bike Holder (what a dumb name, probably mis translated from the BMW version, Fahrradträger, meaning Bike Carrier), I started looking for 50 to 60 mile gravel routes near Epsom, NH.  Didn't find anything that looked good so I started looking at the maps and marking roads on my Roubaix to Brew Gravel Map. Once I found enough dirt, I developed the following route:

It will be interesting to see how the Sex Machine works have only the granny and big ring available for the ride.

First Dirt, pictured above, occurred around mile 5.
