I headed out after work today to Tinmouth by way of West Rutland and Ira and rode VT 133 for some more paved roads. Little did I know but there was a geological wonder sitting along side VT 140 heading towards Wallinford, Table Rock. An amusing roadside attraction that features a large, flat glacial erratic that someone added some equally large hand made chairs to make it look like giants would be using this for their supper.
Coming out of West Rutland and into IRA there is this interesting mailbox post made out of old skis and lashed together with some rope.
Some cattle in Ira
Glacial Action: The dramatic white quartzite cliffs and the massive boulder field known as Chaos Canyon were formed roughly 12,000 years ago during the last Ice Age.Freeze-Thaw Erosion: Glacial ice and severe freeze-thaw cycles cracked massive chunks of Cheshire quartzite from the mountain face, creating a giant talus slope (a sloping pile of rock fragments) at the base. The Ice Beds: The jumbled, deep piles of rocks trap cold winter air and ice deep inside the crevices, preserving ice well into the summer months and cooling the surrounding microclimate
Crossing over RT 7, I decided to avoid VT 140 coming out of Wallingford and opted for Church Street which parallel's the state road. The picture above doesn't do it justice but it was steep.
This was interesting menagerie, only animal not represented were sheep.
Merging back with VT 140 I hit the other really steep section seen in the climb profile which was around 12%.
