XC Skiing at Cache Creek

 March 6, 2024

My dad dropped me off at the Cache Creek trail head and I headed up the trail. This time around I brought my XC skis instead of the Backcountry skis because I figured they would do better in the groomed tracks.

While the skis did fit better in the tracks the snow was really sticky and one more than one occasion I had stop and reapply wax.

Despite the manky snow it was a blue bird day and I was taking advantage of it.

The Grand Teton was a little clouded in a today

Grooming stopped halfway up the trail but I decided to bust my own track. Of course now I was wishing I had my Backcountry skis.

Cache Peak was looking stupendous

This is a banner snow year

The ungroomed snow was really tough and I finally decided to turn around before the junction with Game Creek.

I did get a good view of Pinnacle Peak

Heading down in my own track was definitely easier than the climb up.

I made pretty good time on the more traveled section. At the trail head I noticed a lot debris scattered all about: empty poop bags, dog toys, leashes, even a ski pole. Turns out a moose wandered into the busy trail and everybody there dropped what they were doing and fled.

Here’s the moose. My dad sent me this picture after he dropped me off. Guess the moose wanted to get in on the action at the trail head. I ended up skiing down the access road and then hitched hiked back to Snow King.
