RAW: Rail Trail and Dirt Roads

 July 1, 2024

Ann got back after her shift at the hospital and was feeling restless and wanted to go for a ride.

I created this route thinking it would be a good primer for Ann that had some climbing

We parked in the center of Leb and headed out on the Northern Trail towards Lake Mascoma

Cool graffiti under I-89

Nice and shady from the July afternoon heat

First look at Lake Mascoma

Nicer views from the trail

Just 133 miles to Boston

The Northern Rail Trail in New Hampshire is a 58-59 mile multi-use trail running from Lebanon to Boscawen, largely following the former Boston & Maine Railroad line. It is one of the state's longest rail trails, offering a flat-to-gentle grade surface of crushed stone/gravel ideal for hiking, cycling, and equestrian use, passing through historic towns, lakes, and forests.

The cuts also offer a respite from the heat

When we turned off onto South Road we got a bit of a surprise and found the road had been recently paved. It was getting late so we decided to turn around and head back

We rode back along RT 4

and then cut through Enfield, NH

crossed over the lake

Rode back along the lake on RT 4A

picked up the rail trail back to Leb.
