I am still wondering if there is a crack in the frame. I need to go over all the welds really carefully and see if there is. That little creak is driving me nuts. Moving the cog in one spacer seems to have helped the chain noise though I probably need a new chain ring.
I had a similar, vexing sound that I couldn't track. After removing and reinstalling the cranks and bottom bracket (at least twice), I finally determined it was the pedals that needed to be cleaned and regreased. I too am running Crankbrothers pedals (Mallet).
