A 29er on the Hartford Craigslist?

You don't see many 29ers, if any at all on any of the CT Craigslist Bike sites, so I thought this add would be fun to look at. Looks like the seller tried the koolaid and didn't like the after taste:

Hartford Craigslist: GT Peace 9er - $500
for posterity, I have captured an image of the add:

Check out the write up on TwentynineInches.com: GT Peace 9er and true to CList pricing standards the $500 price tag is 9% under MSRP, with tax, you are saving 15%. The seller doesn't say OBO so it sounds like he might not be willing to part with it for less than $500 but you never know. Haven't seen this bike for sale on Bikerag, Crankfire or Bustedspoke so clearly he isn't trying to sell this hard enough. Some missing information, which is the most important is the frame sizing.

The review of the bike points out some weaknesses but the main weakness is lack of disc brake mounts. However, to give you some perspective, I found an add for a 2008 GT Peace 9er on Busted spoke and check out what you get for $575 or 12% of the retail value of this year's model:
2008 29er Single speed w/ disk brakes

Was gonna keep this bad boy but not a viable option right now. This is my new 29R single speed. Never seen dirt. Never seen any action actually.

The disc brakes are not Avid BB7s, if you are going to get mechanicals, then Avids are the best and the rest of the components are OK I suppose but the important example is the price differential. This bike hasn't seen dirt, looks like it in the pictures, where the other one has. If you could get a 2007 between $400 and $450 then I would think you are getting a good deal.

The funny thing about pricing on Craigslist is figuring out the true worth of the bike. I like to go to eBay to see if I can find what the market value of a used bike or nearly used bike would be before trying to sell my own or buy something from CL.

For example check these auctions out:

$375 and a buy it now. Looks like a new bike and with shipping you are looking at $445. And there are two others where the reserve hasn't been met but the first one I think is probably the best judge of what the market is willing to pay for this bike.

Waaay too much information

For $300 you would think you are getting an incredible deal or are you? I think all this information about this bike is too much and makes the add confusing. Someone who is going to buy $300 bike isn't going to care about this much detail about all the parts, which to be frank aren't that great. It's stock parts that came with the bike. Anyone can list the stock parts list, I would just highlight any upgrades. Maybe if the bike was being sold $3000 and all the parts were real bling, bling than all this information would be useful.

Still, this would be a great entry level bike for someone wanting to get a taste of the Kewlaid without making a big commitment.

Real men have rigid forks!

The Crazy Eddie of Framingham does it again! I wonder if this marketing technique is effective. Basically cajoling people to buy his products. If anything, it's definitely amusing.

Single spd and 8 spd 29er mountain bikes - $300 (Framingham)

Hey you rough, tough mountain dudes ! I see you at Lynn Woods and Viet Nam with your full-suspension, 27-speed wussie bikes.

Stop being a girly, sugar-assed puffball.!
Try one of these brand-new, steel, single-speed 29ers, - no suspension, no gears; - pure minimalism.

These are 40% off list price.

I have sizes 17 and 19 in 26 inch single-speeed for $260, - sizes 19 and 21 in single speed 29ers for $280, - sizes 15, 17, 19, in 8-speed 29er for $335 – size 17 in aluminum 29er with discs for $360.

Us single-speed mountain guys are so tough, when we go to the bathroom – crowbars come out !

Real men have rigid forks !

I wonder in if this is the same GT Peace 29er that I found on Craigslist earlier this year? Again, this could be a pretty good deal if you could get for $300 or $400. Based on Eddie's prices, you could do a day long road trip consisting of buying a new bike (because that is always fun), hitting a brew pub, and going riding. Probably a 3 hour round trip drive, hit Eddie's shop, do lunch at Post Road Brewing Company and sneak in a ride at Lynn Woods on the way home would be a great Master Card commercial.

And here is another 29er in CT up for grabs! Aesthetically, I am not sure I dig the green Chris King headset on purple bike. If the guy is ready for a new one he either realizes he is indeed a puff ball and can't stand riding rigid or he's got so many miles on this bike that it's about to fall apart. Size and miles are the two questions you might want to ask this seller.

2007 Kona Unit 2-9 29er...Chris King, DT Swiss, EXTRAS!! (North Stongington)

PARTS LIST:

Cook Brothers Crank set. (Indestructible)
Chris King Green Headset
SPD pedals
Salsa Degado rear rim with XT hub
DT Swiss front wheel. with 340 hub
brand new brake levers
brand new avid front and rear mechanical disc brakes
wtb seat with seat post
brand new Kenda Nevangal rear tire
used but in good condition kenda Karma front tire
new tubes in tires
Ritchey stem and handlebar

Might be a good deal but if you are interested in this bike but don't discount Crazy Eddie, his prices are INSANE.

If I get another 29er, it will definitely have gears and it will be rigid. In fact, I would probably use it to replace the 'Goose.
