Lake Waramaug Camping & Cycling

We took Ann’s new camper out to Lake Waramaug State Park for two nights of camping. It was my first time with a camper and I was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was.

I hadn’t really signed on to the whole camping with a camper thing because it seemed like there were a lot of moving parts and everything appeared complicated. Ann is an expert at this and as we dove deeper and deeper into prepping the trailer, driving to the camp ground and then getting the campsite ready; I really got into it. Of course we brought our bikes but there was so much to do when we first arrived there was no time to ride on the first day.

We made dinner and relaxed in front of our gas fire pit and celebrated Ann’s birthday. Having a gas fire pit beats burning wood because you don’t have to deal with the smoke and smell that permeates your clothing.

We went for a walk around the camp to check out everyone else’s set ups and there was wide variety of tent encampments, camper trailers, and truck campers. One group even invited us to sample their open fire cooked chicken wings and asparagus. It was so tasty. We thanked them profusely and then walked to the camp admin building to see if they sold any ice cream.

The Park didn’t really have a store although they sold firewood and ice but one of the workers gave us freezer pops. By this time the moon had risen and it was full.

The next morning I made smoothies for breakfast and then we went out to ride around the lake.

It was perfect cycling weather. After the first lap, Ann needed a break to rest her leg so we stopped in front of the State Park to drink water and then we headed out for a second lap.

We came upon some Moto’s taking pictures of themselves and their bikes.

It’s ironic that moto’s do the same thing as cyclists. I yelled out to them, “Bravo - we do the same thing!”

There were some interesting signs along the way, like Watch out for slow dogs

and Lake it Slow!

We stopped for ice cream at the Smithy Cafe

and had Ice Cream for lunch!

Instead of riding up Route 45 back to the lake we headed across Route 202 and up Baldwin Hill and turned onto Christian Street. Then back onto New Milford Turnpike for 100 yards and then turned onto Flirtation Avenue.

There were some nice Rhododendrons

and I found where the cows were hiding at the farm near the Kent Town Line.

For lunch, we made sandwiches and took them with us to Kent Falls Brewery.

Then we headed over to Kent Falls State Park, the brewery’s namesake

and climbed up to the top of the falls.

We went to The White Horse in Mabledale for a proper birthday dinner.

Ann had the Chicken Pot Pie and I had the Shepard’s Pie.

A birthday desert then it was back to the camper and the fire pit fire for a relaxing evening.

The next day we hit the dump station and cleaned out our gray and black water tanks.
